Ghost Flamingo 18

August 2013

In 2006, my photography professor (Jim Sheen) introduced me to a Holga camera. At the time I thought it was a cruel joke. However, I have since learned to love the simplicity of it. It forces me to be more in tune with my subjects and surroundings. The holga camera does not have a light meter or even a working view finder. It also allows the photographer to take multiple exposures with ease. This is by far my favorite feature. It allows me to showcase images that seem surreal based on the subject matter.

This particular photograph was taken at the National Zoo in Washington DC. My friend from Scotland was in town and we decided to be tourists for the day. The image is titled "Ghost Flamingo 18" to make the viewer look at the image in more detail. Unlike most double exposures, the effect on this one is very subtle. The viewer really needs to get up close and look at the flamingo to see their translucency. I particularly like the chaos that the multiple exposure of the flamingos creates.
